GALACTOGRAPHY

Galactography or “Ductography” is a procedure sometimes performed to evaluate nipple discharge. If a patient has discharge which is coming from a single duct in the breast which is persistent, usually spontaneous, and often times bloody, then a ductogram may be ordered. Using a tiny cannula, a small amount of x-ray dye is injected into the discharging duct and mammogram pictures are taken. No needles are used! The test may be slightly uncomfortable but should not be painful. The ductogram provides a “map” of the duct causing the problem. If the duct is irregular or any filling defects are seen, this may help guide treatment such as surgery. Usually the discharge turns out to be caused by benign process.
