BREAST BIOPSY - STEREOTACTIC CORE BIOPSY
This is a special type of biopsy usually performed for suspicious calcifications seen on a mammogram. Occasionally a nodular area not seen with sonography will also be sampled with this technique. The stereotactic equipment uses a specialized x-ray unit and computer to accurately localize areas of concern in the breast. Local anesthesia is used and needle samples of tissue are extracted from the breast. Quite often, a tiny clip is place to mark the spot after the tissue is taken. About 80% of these biopsies are negative for cancer. When a cancerous tumor is found, the chance of complete cure is very high when it is detected early.
At Memorial Medical Center, we have been performing stereotactic biopsies since 1994 and have done over 1900 procedures.
Prior to the Exam
You may have a light breakfast or lunch before coming. If you take aspirin on a regular basis, please stop taking it three days prior to your procedure. If you take any other blood thinners, please let us know so we can discuss this with your physician. Take your other medications as prescribed. Wear a comfortable two piece garment. Avoid using deodorant or powder on the day of your biopsy.
During the exam
You will lie on your stomach on a specially designed table with your breast placed through an opening in the table top. The table will be raised so the radiologist and mammography technologist can perform the procedure from beneath.
Your breast will be slightly compressed and held in place throughout the procedure. X-rays will be taken as needed to guide the biopsy.
You will feel a small skin prick as the skin of your breast is anesthetized. You will feel some pressure as a small biopsy needle is inserted into the breast to extract small pieces (cores) of tissue from the area of concern.
During the procedure, we will inform you of what is happening and what you will need to do to assist with the exam. It will last about one hour.
After The Exam
There may be some bleeding where the needle was inserted. This will be bandaged and a cold pack applied to minimize swelling and bruising. You may need to take Tylenol for discomfort. Bruising usually resolves within seven days. If you have excessive swelling, bleeding, drainage, redness, or heat, please contact us right away.
We usually have the results of your biopsy within two days although it can sometimes take longer. We will notify you as soon as we receive the pathology report.
