What is a Radiologist?
A radiologist is a physician who practices the specialty called diagnostic radiology. Like all physicians, a radiologist undergoes extensive education and training. After four years of medical school, a radiologist will have a one year internship in medicine or surgery. The internship is followed by a four year residency, which includes thorough training in all facets of diagnostic radiology. Towards the end of residency, the radiologist must pass a written test covering the physics of imaging, a written test covering all clinical aspects of radiology, and an oral examination covering all aspects of radiology. Upon completion of that training and successful passing of those tests, the radiologist is certified by the American Board of Radiology and is a board certified radiologist.
Some radiologists will opt for additional sub-specialty training after completion of their residency. The additional training is called a fellowship and usually lasts one to two years. Areas of sub-specialty training include: breast imaging, neuroradiology (imaging of the brain and spine), body imaging, chest and cardiac imaging, musculoskeletal radiology, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology and pediatric radiology.
The practice of radiology involves two general types of work: diagnostic imaging and interventional procedures. Diagnostic imaging involves interpretation of images created by any imaging modality, including x-rays, ultrasound (US), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, etc. The imaging and interpretation help in diagnosing or following disease processes. Interventional procedures involve placements of needles or tubes into the body, generally to diagnose or treat disease. A comprehensive list of procedures we perform can be found on this website.
