ABDOMEN ULTRASOUND
(Liver, Gallbladder, Bile Ducts, Pancreas, Kidneys, Aorta, Doppler Exams of the Liver or Mesenteric Arteries)

  • Nothing by mouth for 6 to 8 hours prior to the examination. Eating or drinking may cause the gallbladder to contract and become difficult to see. Eating or drinking may cause bowel gas that interferes with the exam.

ANGIOGRAM

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  • If diabetic do not take insulin or oral diabetic medicines.
  • Take am meds with sip of water except blood thinners and diabetic medicines. Contact us prior to the day of the exam if you are currently taking Coumadin for further instructions.
  • Metformin* products should be held for 48 hours post contrast & then resumed by referring physician once serum BUN & creatinine have been reviewed.
  • Please notify us prior to the day of your exam if you have a history of contrast allergy or reaction.
  • You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure.

*Metformin products: Glucophage, Glucovance, Avandamet, or Metaglip

ARTHROGRAM/JOINT INJECTION/JOINT ASPIRATION

  • No special preparation is required prior to arrival at the department. However, it may be good to have no food or liquids for a couple hours prior to the procedure.
  • Please notify us prior to the day of the exam if you have drug allergies and if you take blood thinners such as Coumadin or Plavix.

BIOPSY - BREAST

CRYOABLATION

  • Bring any related films NOT done @ MMC.
  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  • Take am meds with sip of water except blood thinners and diabetic medicines. Contact your referring physician for further instructions if you are currently taking Coumadin, Plavix, or other blood thinners.
  • If diabetic do not take insulin or oral diabetic medicines.
  • If procedure is performed in the CAT scan & contrast is given, Metformin* products should be held for 48 hours post contrast & then resumed by referring physician once serum BUN & creatine have been reviewed.
  • You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure.

CT COLONOGRAPHY

  • Eat a low residue diet 2 days before the exam.
  • Have only clear liquids the day prior to the exam.
  • Complete a full bowel preparation the day prior to the examination (usually Go-Lytely, Nu- Lytely, or Half-Lytely plus 4 Bisacodyl tablets).
  • Drink a bottle of Tagitol with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Drink 60ml Gastroview at bed time.
  • Take am meds with sip of water. Have nothing else by mouth until after the exam.

CT CORONARY ANGIOGRAPHY (CT of the Heart)

  • No caffeine, coffee, tea, chocolate, decongestant or cold medicine and no solid foods after midnight.
  • Drink 2 large glasses of water 2 hours prior to the exam and drink lots of fluids for the remainder of the day if possible.
  • Some patients will need blood tests to assess kidney function prior to the exam.

CT SCAN

  • Take all prescribed medications.
  • Bring any related films NOT done @ MMC.
  • If you are a diabetic, history of renal disease or 65 years of age or >, and will be receiving IV contrast, you will need to have a BUN & creatinine serum level within 60 days of the exam.
  • Metformin* products should be held for 48 hours post contrast & then resumed by referring physician once serum BUN & creatinine have been reviewed.
  • Please notify us prior to the day of your exam if you have a history of contrast allergy or reaction.
  • Patients having a CT of abdomen/pelvis will be required to drink 2 large cups of flavored contrast @ least 1 hour prior to the exam. You will then drink 1 additional cup of contrast before the exam.
  • You are encouraged to drink plenty of liquids during the 12 to 24 hours prior to a CT scan and during the 12 or so hours following the CT scan

DISCOGRAM

  • Clear liquid diet only the day of the exam.
  • Take am meds with sip of water except blood thinners and diabetic medicines. Contact your referring physician for further instructions if you are currently taking Coumadin, Plavix or other blood thinners.
  • You will need someone to drive you home.

DRAINAGE CATHETER INSERTION (ABSCESS, BILIARY, CHOLECYSTOSTOMY, NEPHROSTOMY)

  • Bring any related films NOT done @ MMC.
  • If you are a diabetic, history of renal disease or 65 years of age or >, and will be receiving IV contrast, you will need to have a BUN & creatinine serum level within 60 days of the exam.
  • Please notify us prior to the day of your exam if you have a history of contrast allergy or reaction.
  • Patients having a CT of abdomen/pelvis will be required to drink 2 large cups of flavored contrast @ least 1 hour prior to the exam. You will then drink 1 additional cup of contrast before the exam.
  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  • Take am meds with sip of water except blood thinners and diabetic medicines. Contact your referring physician if you are currently taking Coumadin for further instructions.
  • If diabetic with 0800 am case liquid breakfast before 0700 reduce insulin dose by ½. OK to take oral meds.
  • If diabetic do not take insulin or oral diabetic medicines.
  • If procedure is performed in the CAT scan & contrast is given, Metformin* products should be held for 48 hours post contrast & then resumed by referring physician once serum BUN & creatine have been reviewed.
  • You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure.

EPIDURAL INJECTIONS FOR PAIN CONTROL

  • Take am meds with sip of water except for aspirin, Coumadin, Plavix, or other blood thinners. Contact your referring physician for further instructions if you are currently taking Coumadin, Plavix, or other blood thinners.
  • Please notify us prior to the day of your exam if you have a history of contrast allergy or reaction.
  • You will need someone to drive you home.

MRI
MRI is a powerful and safe imaging modality. However, the strong magnetic field and radio waves can interfere with some devices.

Patients with the following will not be allowed into the MRI scanner room:

  • Cardiac pacemakers
  • Implanted defibrillators
  • Brain aneurysm clips
  • Metallic implants or foreign bodies in or around the eye
  • Inner ear implants

Preparation for MRI

  • Nothing by mouth for 4-6 hours prior to MRI of organs or blood vessels in the abdomen or pelvis.
  • Notify the technologist if you have any metal, metallic devices or other medical devices implanted anywhere in your body. The technologist will then determine whether the MRI is appropriate.
  • If you are having sedation for claustrophobia, having nothing by mouth for 3 hours prior to the exam and have someone available to drive you home.

MYELOGRAM

  • Take am meds with sip of water except aspirin, Coumadin, Plavix, or other blood thinners. Contact your referring physician for further instruction if you are taking Coumadin, Plavix, or other blood thinners.

NECK ULTRASOUND

  • No preparation needed.

NUCLEAR MEDICINE PROCEDURE PREPARATIONS

BONE SCAN

  • No preparation. Simple fluids between the injection of the bone scan agent and the actual scan.

BRAIN SCAN

  • No preparation.

CARDIAC STRESS TEST

  • Nothing by mouth for at least 4 hours prior to the exam.
  • No caffeine, theophylline, decongestants, or beta-blockers prior to the exam.

GALLIUM SCAN

  • No preparation.

GASTRIC EMPYTING SCAN

  • Nothing by mouth after midnight.

HEPATOBILIARY (HIDA) SCAN

  • Nothing by mouth for at least 4 hours prior to the exam.
  • No narcotics for at least 8 hours prior to the exam. If the scan is ordered “with CCK”, no narcotics for 24 hours prior to the exam.

  • No preparation.

LIVER SPLEEN SCAN

  • No preparation.

LUNG SCAN (VENTILATION-PERFUSION OR V/Q SCAN)

  • No preparation.

MECKEL’S SCAN

  • Nothing by mouth after midnight.

PET or PET/CT SCAN

  • Nothing by mouth after midnight.
  • Patients will need to drink oral contrast prior to the test.
  • Blood sugar must be less than 180 mg/dl.

PARACENTESIS/THORACENTESIS

  • Nothing by mouth for 2-3 hours prior to the exam.
  • Have someone available to drive you home.
  • Please notify us prior to the day of your exam if you have drug allergies or if you are currently taking blood thinners such as Plavix or Coumadin.

PELVIC ULTRASOUND & OBSTETRICAL ULTRASOUND

  • Drink fluids prior to the exam; without voiding.
  • A full bladder is necessary for these exams.

PROSTATE ULTRASOUND

  • Fleets enema one to two hours prior to the exam.

  • Bring any related films NOT done @ MMC.
  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

  • If diabetic do not take insulin or oral diabetic medicines.

UTERINE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  • If diabetic do not take insulin or oral diabetic medicines.
  • Take am meds with sip of water except blood thinners and diabetic medicines. Contact us prior to the day of the exam if you are currently taking Coumadin for further instructions.
  • Metformin* products should be held for 48 hours post contrast & then resumed by referring physician once serum BUN & creatinine have been reviewed.
  • Please notify us prior to the day of your exam if you have a history of contrast allergy or reaction.
  • You will probably need to stay overnight. You will need someone to drive you home when you are discharged.
